I think the main secret is just not to try to run a piece of paper through the press a million times (while trying to keep the paper wet for an hour-plus). I'm looking forward to a productive week, so I'm sure I'll see you at the studio!

Thanks! "Trencher" definitely doesn't look like anything else I've ever seen (or even like Giffen's earlier work, either). It's a shame that Giffen has concentrated more on writing than drawing for quite a while now...

thanks for the cool read on giffen/trencher! the trencher era artwork giffen did has been in my head for years now and i had no idea who the artist was or what the book was called. thank god i saw your site! because its always bugged me that it was interesting enough to stick with me for so long

It's just entirely ridiculous, and a frustrating waste of time. I mean, you want to be accessible and be available to people, but I guess there's no shortage of people willing to take advantage of that.

There are no shortcuts! I find that every so often, I have to set aside some time to systematically work through possible issues that are keeping me from working. It's like an oil change for your car. If I can isolate a problem, that takes a lot of the mystery out of it, and I can just start working on fixing whatever needs to be fixed (or ride out whatever needs to be ridden out). I think I've got this nut cracked, it's just a matter of getting back to work at this point.

Nope - I wish there was a concrete and simple way to lure back the muse. I find that I just need to relax and trust the process. Simple drawing for pleasure helps me too - lubes up that hand, eye, brain thing. Something will come; it always has. You are not alone (if that helps) - everyone goes through it.

That pretty much matches my approach although I must admit there are times when I would like to be an "unapproachable weirdo" - I don't often have that opportunity, I have found that explaining printmaking usually takes up enough conversational time for people to pause.
